Legion team tallies 20
Cody Redfield parked one over the centerfield fence and Ryan Nelson homered for the second straight game Monday as Wadena-Deer Creek trounced Verndale 20-2 in American Legion baseball action.
Redfield and Nelson were both 2-for-2 in the four-inning contest. Colter Pettit went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Josh Sweere also collected three hits.
Kyle Powers, Isaac Schmitz and Dustin Motschenbacher came up with hits for Verndale.
Mike Mast gained the victory while Motschenbacher was saddled with the loss.
Five Verndale errors led to nine unearned runs.
Nelson hit a three-run homer and Kevin Tumberg went the distance Friday as the Wadena-Deer Creek Post 171 Legion club edged Bertha-Hewitt 5-4.
Nelson and Gannon George both collected two hits for WDC. Josh Sweere reached three times and scored twice.
Patrick Riewer clubbed a solo shot for Bertha-Hewitt, scored twice and went 3-for-4.
Tumberg scattered nine hits and three walks while fanning five.
Gunner Johnson struck out a whopping 18 batters and fired a two-hitter Wednesday as Staples-Motley blanked WDC 8-0.
"We had a tough time putting the ball in play against Johnson," WDC head coach Kyle Dykhoff said. "Defensively, we could not get that third out."
Johnson and Jordan Riewer combined for four hits and four RBIs in the victory. Matt Hagen and Nick Goeden came up with hits for WDC.
Hagen started on the hill for WDC but gave way to George in the second inning.
Dykhoff's team was playing for the first time without the services of standout catcher Tyler Wohlwend, who is out for the season with a knee injury.
