Legion team takes three
Solid pitching backed up by strong hitting has carried Kyle Dykhoff's Wadena-Deer Creek Post 171 American Legion team to three early victories.
Gannon George struck out eight while allowing just two hits last Tuesday in a 13-2 season-opening win over Walker.
Cody Redfield led an 11-hit barrage by WDC with a three-run homer, five RBIs and two hits. Nick Goeden contributed a solo homer, four runs, two hits, two hits and two stolen bases. Josh Sweere scored three times while collecting two hits. Tyler Wohlwend drove in two runs with two hits and reached twice on walks.
"George had good stuff, he really had his breaking pitches working," Dykhoff said. "We played solid defense and got some big extra base hits."
Matt Hagen took the hill Wednesday and went the distance in a 6-1 victory over Sebeka.
Hagen, who scattered six Sebeka hits and tossed six straight scoreless innings, was backed up by errorless fielding.
Hagen helped his own cause with a pair of hits. Wohlwend had two safeties and two RBIs. Allen Uselman came up with one hit and two ribbies.
Post 171 launched a 20-hit barrage and scored 12 times in the third inning Tuesday in a 24-0 victory over Verndale.
Goeden went 5-for-5, scored four times and drove in two. Jake Rude went 3-for-5. Colter Pettit drove in four runs and scored four times. Tumberg scored three runs while Uselman and Sweere both collected two ribbies. Redfield and Mike Mast combined for a three-hit shutout. The two WDC hurlers combined for six strikeouts and benefitted from errorless fielding.
