The US Environmental Protection Agency

and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency

(MPCA) are reviewing the effectiveness of

the cleanup at the Ritari Post and Pole Su-

perfund Site in Meadow Township, Minneso-

ta. Superfund law requires five-year reviews

of sites where the cleanup is either complet-

ed or in progress, but hazardous waste re-

completed to ensure that the cleanup re-

mains effective and protects human health

and the environment. This, the third five-

year review for this site, is scheduled to be

completed by April 15, 2013.

•Status of the remediation

•How well the remediation is working

•Future actions needed

Soils at the site were contaminated with

pentachlorophenol (PCP), dioxins and fu-

rans. Groundwater at the site was contami-

nated with PCP and the petroleum com-

pounds which were used as carriers for PCP

in the wood treating process. The last re-

view occurred in 2008 and concluded that

the remedy was functioning as intended and

is protective of human health and the envi-

ronment in the short-term, but that certain

actions were needed to ensure long-term

protectiveness. These actions included

evaluation of an additional soil area known

as Area A, evaluation of potential groundwa-

ter flow to the northeast and evaluation of in-

stitutional controls. These actions are ongo-

ing at the site.

ette Road North, St. Paul, Minnesota. The
