OTC, Verndale advance to State in girls softball
Despite entering the 8AA Softball Playoffs with a 19-0 record, Park Region Conference champs Otter Tail Central was just the No. 4 seed in the south sub-section tournament. The Bulldogs proved their perfect record was no fluke, as they will advance to their first ever State Tournament.
OTC beat No. 5 Perham, No. 1 Wadena-Deer Creek, and No. 2 Fergus Falls in the South sub-section. Then, they beat the North's No. 4 team Warroad and No. 6 team Detroit Lakes to advance to the State Tournament as 8AA Champions.
OTC will take on Hermantown in the quarterfinal round in Mankato today (June 5). The Bulldogs have a team batting average of .316 and they stole 97 bases this year.
Hermantown (20-3) is making their 15th appearance at State. They won the Class A title in 1991, and the Class AA title in 2002.
The Park Region Conference's runner-up team, Verndale, will also advance to State as the Section 6A Champs.
The Pirates (20-2), the No. 1 team from the south sub-section, beat the North's No. 1 team, Hawley, in the 6A title game, 5-4.
Verndale is also making their first ever trip to the State Softball Tournament. They will take on Littlefork-Big Falls in the quarterfinals today (June 5) in Mankato.
The Pirates outscored opponents 119-28 this year. Littlefork-Big Falls (19-5) has a team batting average of .470 and scored 174 runs.
