Lake Region Electric Cooperative donates trees for Wadena Deer Creek playground
Wadena-Deer Creek sixth-graders played in the dirt on Friday, April 29, planting trees in the elementary playground.
Four trees, donated by Lake Region Electric Cooperative, were planted inside the WDC playground. Lake Region donated the trees in celebration of Arbor Day and to help replace trees lost in last summer's tornado.
"When the tornado hit last year, we wanted to do something to help Wadena-Deer Creek Schools," said Tim Thompson, CEO, Lake Region Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Pelican Rapids. "We thought the trees would be a good thing to donate to help replenish those your school lost."
The weather was perfect for planting the trees on Friday morning, as students helped dig the holes, covered the trees with dirt and water them.
"This was great! I want to plant more trees," said Blaine Snyder, a WDC sixth-grader, who enjoyed planting his group's tree with Thompson and Bob Shaw, a LREC board member.
The Lake Region board of directors and staff were on hand to help WDC sixth-graders with the tree planting.
WDC sixth-grade teacher Keith Ferris said it was great to see the students working with LREC planting trees.
"The kids loved getting their hands dirty," said Ferris.
