Krause sparks WDC Legion in twinbill sweep
Jake Krause triggered a doubleheader sweep Monday night as the Wadena-Deer Creek Legion team trounced Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 17-8 and 12-0.
Krause launched a three-run homer in Game 1 and added a single and a triple to give himself a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Krause was credited four RBIs.
The seven-inning game saw BHV break on top early with a four-run first inning. BHV was leading 5-0 when Post 171 kicked out five in the top of the fifth.
Post 171 dominated the rest of the game 12-3.
Jonathan Goeden started on the hill and gave WDC six innings before giving way to Isaac Laughlin. Goeden walked seven but fanned nine in earning the win.
Preston Riewer threw three shutout innings to start the game but gave way to Eric Blaha in the fifth. The BHV hurlers were rocked for 15 hits and 13 earned runs.
Goeden was also tough at the plate for WDC collecting three doubles and three RBIs. Matt Laughlin came up with three doubles and two ribbies.
Riewer, John French, Travis Eckel and Nick Brown combined for five runs, seven hits and four RBIs in the loss.
Christian Berg threw a three-hitter as Post 171 blanked BHV in the nightcap.
Berg walked three and fanned five in the four-inning game.
Nick Brown coughed up 10 hits in taking the loss.
Krause was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in Game 2. Mitchell Swanson doubled twice in going 3-for-3. Swanson also drove in two runs. Berg and Jake Dykhoff combined for four hits, four RBIs and two runs.
The WDC Legion will host Sebeka Monday in a 5:30 p.m. game.

Staples-Motley 7-6, WDC 2-1
Mark Kossan and Jordan Wick notched victories Friday as the Staples-Motley Legion squad thumped Wadena-Deer Creek twice in a season-opening doubleheader at Staples.
Matt Laughlin led WDC in Game 1 with two hits and one run. Jake Krause and Jonathan Goeden combined for two hits and two RBIs.
Laughlin suffered the mound loss.
Wick out-dueled Jake Rude in Game 2. Krause collected a hit for WDC and Jake Dykhoff scored WDC’s lone run.
