June Jubilee kicks off Thursday
Events for this year’s annual Wadena June Jubilee are set to begin Thursday, June 13 with the Town & Country Breakfast at Burlington Northern Park in downtown Wadena from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. For a dollar, participants get sausage, pancakes, rolls, juice and milk, as well as the opportunity to chat with neighbors. Next up for the lovers of good food; brats and root beer floats will be served at the Depot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The TC Backyard Barbecue will also be held nearby at Burlington Northern Park from noon to 8:30 p.m, and at Uptown Restaurant’s patio from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
At 7 p.m. is the Grand Parade, which will begin at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Jefferson Street South/Highway 71. The parade route heads north through the downtown area of Wadena and then turns on Aldrich Avenue, ending at the bandstand.
Also on June 13, a medallion hunt sponsored by Tri-County Health Care (TCHC) will run until the medallion is found. The first clues will be available at the Town & Country Breakfast, as well as the TCHC front desk.
On Friday, June 14, the schedule begins with the annual Wolverine Scramble at Whitetail Run Golf Course, which has a shotgun start at 12 p.m. See this week’s Sports Briefs for more information on the scramble. There is a steak fry at the VFW from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Starting at 7 p.m. there will be a concert at the Wadena County Fairgrounds with performances by Jeremiah James Korfe at 7 p.m. and Little Texas at 9 p.m. Pizza Ranch will serve pizza there from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Finally, there will be a fireworks display at the fairgrounds at 10:30.
Saturday, June 15 is Family Day at Sunnybrook Park, which includes a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. (free for kids), the Wadena VFW’s Youth Fishing Derby from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., baseball and softball batting from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m; as well as crafts and games like hula hoops, jump roping and a bean bag challenge during the same time slot. There will be root beer floats served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a Kiddies Tractor Pull at 2:30 p.m. Other features on Saturday include two inflatable bouncy structures and caricatures by Doug Curtis.
Additionally on Saturday, Wadena-Deer Creek Public Schools are organizing their annual Sunnybrook Stomp 5K Walk/Run. Happening along the Sunnybrook Park trail, the race starts at 8 a.m. with registration from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. at the Rotary Shelter. There will also be a 1K fun run half an hour before the 5K race for kids 11 and under.
Finally, there will more adult fare Saturday night as STOMP MMA cage fights take place at the National Guard Armory. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the fights start at 7 p.m.
