Judy Taves was sworn in as Wadena County’s new auditor/treasurer Monday by Judge Sally Ireland Robertson.
Taves is planned to be a county employee until the term of auditor/treasurer expires Dec. 31, 2014. She will be eligible to run for re-election in the November 2014 general election, should she choose to do so.
Taves is completing the four-year term of Char West, who resigned Jan. 18 to be an administrator/clerk for the City of Menahga. West was elected to the four-year term in November 2010, and served the county for 10 years.
Taves is no stranger to public service. She was a member of the Wadena-Deer Creek Board of Education from 1995-2008. She also volunteered at the school when her children attended.
“My parents taught me it’s important to give back,” Taves said.
Born and raised in Lubbock, Texas, Taves’ family included her parents and a brother. She attended Texas Technical University, where she met her husband. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas Tech.
After moving to Minnesota, she earned a master’s degree in education from Bemidji State University. When she moved to Wadena, she first worked for Rural Minnesota CEP in Detroit Lakes during the 1970s. From 1984-1988, she taught accounting at what was then Wadena Technical College.
Taves is a certified public accountant (CPA), and worked for the firm Carlson Highland and Co. and its predecessor for 18 years before accepting the auditor/treasurer position.
Taves is married to attorney Harry Taves of Wadena, who grew up in Verndale and attended University of Minnesota and Texas Tech. The couple has a boy and a girl. Their son, Jonathan, is a CPA working in Minneapolis, and their daughter, Jennifer, graduated from medical school in 2012, and is completing her residency at St. Cloud Hospital.
When she has free time, Judy Taves enjoys walking, biking, cross-country skiing, reading and attending movies and theatre productions. She and her husband also like to go to Minnesota Gopher games whenever they can. They also enjoy Twins baseball.
Judy also sings in the choir at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
“My job right now is to listen and learn. It’s a privilege and an honor to serve the people of Wadena County,” said Taves after her first day on the job.
