Johnson facing challenge with 2012 fastpitch team
Dan Johnson has his work cut out for him as his Verndale Pirates gear up for their 2012 fastpitch softball season.
The Pirates will be short of experience with just two seniors in the lineup.
Jordy Schlutter and Tori Kern are the team's upperclassmen. Schlutter will play first base while Kern returns to the outfield.
Juniors back include shortstop-pitcher Teresa Moenkedick and outfielder Jackie Swenson. Moenkedick was one of Verndale's top two hitters last year.
Sophomore Kirstin Korfe will Moenkedick's counterpart, pitching when Moenkedick is at short and handling the short when she is pitching. Korfe shared the pitching duties with Jenny Swenson last year. She was also one of Verndale's top sticks.
Other players vying for spots on the roster include junior Shelsy Meidinger (outfield); sophomores Brooke Holweg (outfield), Rachel Bertram (outfield) and Kyle Uselman (outfield); freshmen Elyssa Kern (infield), Kylie Wright (outfield), Jessica Wright (infield-outfield) and Christina Wright (infield-outfield) and eighth-graders Jordan Glenz (infield-outfield), Sara Moenkedick (infield-outfield) and Sydney Weniger (catcher).
The Pirates are coming off a 3-18 season. The club had a rough time in the Park Region Conference last year winning just one of 14 games.
The Pirates open their fastpitch campaign Monday hosting Sebeka.
