John Dennis Malone, 86, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the Staples Care Center, where he has resided for the past two years.
He was born Nov. 3, 1922, on a farm north of Verndale to Patrick and Lena (Tabery) Malone. He grew up in the Wadena area and attended country school through the eighth grade. He married Ione Goeden on June 30, 1948. They farmed west of Bluegrass, and raised a family of 11 children. He was a member of St. Hubert's Parish until 1987 when he retired and moved to Wadena and joined St. Ann's Parish. He was an active member of St. Joseph's Society, Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. He loved hunting, fishing and woodworking, and he enjoyed bowling on a league until three years ago. Family vacations were taken in New Jersey, Colorado, Alaska, the Black Hills, Wisconsin Dells, along with Canadian fishing trips and deer hunting in Wyoming.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, June 29, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wadena with the Rev. Wilfred Theisen as celebrant. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Wadena. Pallbearers were Jason Thompson, Patrick Malone, Charlie Rhode, Mike Jernberg, Ryan Malone, Dusty Dertinger and Bob Malone. Survivors include his wife, Ione; children, Julianne (Jay) Thompson of Columbia Heights, Minn., Larry (Karen) of Wadena, Marilyn (Chuck) Rhode of Onamia, Minn., Rosemary (Chuck) Jernberg of St. Cloud, Jim (Pam) of Foreston, Minn., Janice (Wayne) Dertinger of Frazee, Minn., Alan (Shirley) of Wadena, Dean of Sebeka, Eugene (Sue) of Cold Spring, Minn., Terence (Julie) of Owatonna, Minn., and Elizabeth (John) Schmitt of Richmond; 36 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Eileen Johnson of Wasilla, Alaska, Martin, Lorraine (Joe) Goeden, and Tom (Evelyn), all of Wadena, Joe (Leojean) of Bemidji, Paul (Vera) of Sebeka, Patty (Lee) Kicker and Eugene (Eileen), both of Wadena, and Joan (Steve) Vokurka of Littleton, Colo.; sister-in-law, Barbara Malone; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Maurice; brother-in-law, Vern Johnson; and sister-in-law, Patricia Malone.
