The funeral service for Joann Messer of Verndale will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bartlett Township, with Pastor Al Jeske officiating. Friends may call on Monday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Domian-Anderson Chapel in Bertha. Visitation will resume at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 until the time of service. Joann passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Lakewood Health System Hospital in Staples, MN.
Joann was born to Sanford and Verona (Peka) Kuhnke on February 2, 1951, in Bertha, MN. She graduated in 1969 from Bertha High School. Joann married Curtis Messer on November 1, 1969, at Faith Lutheran Church in Staples. They made their home in the Verndale area, where Joann enjoyed the life of wife, mother and grandmother. Her days were filled with bird watching, flower gardening, searching for treasures at flea markets & antique shops, along with attending classic car shows & farm shows. Most of all, she loved playing and spending time with her grandchildren, and always found ways to share her dads love for the Christmas season with family and friends.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents Sanford and Verona Kuhnke and brother Robert Kuhnke.
Joann is survived by her husband Curtis; son Craig Messer (Shannon Neilson) of Verndale; daughters Tracy (Pat) Hegarty of Bertha, and Kerri Messer (Brian Prather) of Eagle Bend; seven grandchildren; brother Steve (Kathy) Kuhnke and sister Kathy (Herman) Wiese; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Hegarty, Clara Prather, Sammy Hegarty, Anna Hegarty, Brady Messer and Lydia Prather. Serving as pallbearers will be Dalton Emerson, Zachary Ward, Roger Wiese, Kevin Wiese, Mark Bristlin and Mike Bristlin.
