Joan Hutson, born in 1929 in Wadena, passed away on May 22. Her parents were Anthony and Kathryn Ehlen. Married in 1953 to Gerald Hutson, a career military man, the family lived in Montana, Iowa, Michigan, and Spain.
Joan was a mother of seven children and an author, illustrator, musician, and educator. In her later years she returned to Wadena where she taught for seventeen years at St. Anns School where four generations of her family had attended. She was deeply involved in the music ministry of St. Anns Church for many years. With over twenty published books, she continued to write and illustrate books that deepened spiritual life for the rest of her life.
Joan is survived by her seven children, Mark, Mike (Annalee), Mary, Vicki, Greg (Romi), Jill and Jay (Deb); eleven grandchildren, Matthew Hutson, Ryan Hutson, Isaiah Salinas, Jason McDonnell, Monique Ware, Danielle Jackson, Shelley Hutson, Andrew Hutson, Amanda Frederick, Mikaela Hutson and Neil Hutson; ten great-grandchildren, Michael Hutson, Benjamin Hutson, Wyatt Hutson, Clayton Hutson, Sienna Hutson, Zabdiel Ware, AdaLia Spear, Adriana Spear, Everlyn Frederick and Luke Hutson; and one sister, Kathleen Sauls, living in Lake City, Fla. Her brother, Jim, preceded her in death in 1993.
Joan will be missed by family, friends, and former students. She had a way of making everyone feel special as she shared her creative talents and nurturing spirit.
A Memorial Mass will celebrated at St. Anns Church in Wadena on Wednesday, May 28.
