Jahnke, Lohmiller pace Wolverines at BSU

Veterans Autumn Jahnke and Sutton Lohmiller both picked up third place finishes Tuesday as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines opened their track and field season in the Paul Bunyan Classic at Bemidji State.

Jahnke cleared the bar at 8-6, but was edged out of the top spot by Grand Forks Central's Grace Finney, who went 9-0 and Bagley-Fosston's Gina Balstad who also vaulted 8-6.

The pole vault turned into a good scoring event for the Wolverines with Liz Peterson tying International Falls' Amy Auran for fifth with a vault of 7-6.

Lohmiller made his mark in the shot put with a toss of 45-6. Pequot Lakes' Travis Jacobson took top honors with a 49-8.5 effort. Grand Forks Red River's Carter Buelow was second with a 46-5.

Danyel Post and Brody Wangsness turned in sixth-place finishes for WDC in the 400 dash and 60 hurdles. Post ran the 400 in 1:06.79. Wangsness improved on his eighth-place qualifying time of 9.59 in the 60 hurdles by running a 9.47.

Peterson gave the Wolverines a strong seventh-place showing in the high jump by clearing the bar at 4-8. Peterson was one of seven high jumpers to clear 4-8.

Sam Kelderman ran the 400 dash in 58.55 for 11th place.

Hope Theisen, who joined the track and field team this spring, ran the 400 in 1:09.89 for 17th place.

Turning in the best distance effort for the Wolverines was Will Eliason with a 13th place effort of 5:15.79 in the 1,600 run.

"It was exciting to see our new kids compete and see how much progress our returning athletes have improved," WDC head coach Marc Reynolds said.

Reynolds also praised the efforts of several newcomers including

Tommaso Caramelli, Jonathon Pantages and Dakota Mittag.

The WDC girls placed 11th in the team scoring with 14.5 points. The WDC boys finished 13th with nine points. Grand Forks Red River took top honors in both the girls and boys' meets. Bemidji was the runner-up in both meets.
