Isaacson, Steward win regional boxing titles
Wadena superheavyweight Justin Isaacson and 178-pounder Dewayne Steward earned a trip to the Upper Midwest Tournament over the weekend with a pair of victories in the Region IV Golden Gloves Tournament at the Wadena Armory. Friday's action starts at 7 p.m. while Saturday's finals begin at 11 a.m. The national tournament is set in Little Rock, Ark.
Isaacson decisioned rugged Judd Worley of St. Cloud in Friday's opening round and then topped St. Cloud's Eric Lamb on Saturday. Isaacson took an eight-count in his fight with Lamb but rallied in the final two rounds for the decision.
Steward won the 178-pound title when Leech Lake's Junior Robinson forfeited their match.
Isaacson and Steward will now compete with other Class A boxers at the Walker Casino April 9-10.
Wadena boxer Trent Petro won a decision in his heavyweight bout with Willmar's Ben Dohls on Friday but lost a close decision Saturday to White Earth's Glenn Sommars.
T.J. Steward of Wadena won a decision over Brenden Feiler of St. Cloud in Friday's 152-pound bout. Fergus Falls' Jesse Wannemacher won the trip to Walker by stopping Steward in Saturday's finals.
Wadena's Travis Petro was unable to get past Detroit Lakes' Shane Kern in the 165-pound division.
The Wadena Boxing Club won the Region IV team title while T.J. Steward won the Sportsmanship award and Isaacson won the Fightingest Fighter trophy.
Travis Petro, John Johnson, Albert Boldt, Kira Ollila and Shane Motschenbacher of the Wadena team won their novice and junior bouts on Friday.
Petro scored an RSC in his match with Leech Lake's Kory Monacelli. Johnson mixed up his combinations to decision Casey Holt of Detroit Lakes. Boldt landed some solid jabs in decsioning Charles Oothoudt of Leech Lake. Ollila scored a second round RSC over Detroit Lakes' Letesha Anderson. Motschenbacher won his 128-pound fight over Brainerd's Luke Zontelli for a decision.
Wadena's Matt Umland lost by split decision to Fernando Zavala of Willmar..
