Irene Skon, age 72, of Osakis, MN, and formerly of Wadena and Glenwood, died Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Knute Nelson in Alexandria, MN. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, January 9th, at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5 - 7 P.M. at the funeral home in Glenwood, and on Thursday, beginning at 10 A.M. and running until the time of service. Interment will be at 2 P.M. on Thursday at the Wadena Cemetery in Wadena, MN. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Irene Elizabeth Skon, daughter of William "Bill" and Marie (Uselman) Walz, was born in Wadena, MN, on March 30, 1941. She grew up in Wadena where she attended St. Anns Catholic Church and was a graduate of Wadena High School.
On February 11, 1961, Irene was united in marriage to George C. Skon, Jr. at Verndale, MN. The two made their home in Wadena and their marriage was blessed with three children, George, Terry, and Kelly. Irene was employed for over 30 years in the accounting/administration office at Shady Lane Nursing Home in Wadena.
After Irenes husband, George, passed away in 1996, she remained in their home and managed her rental apartments until 2003. At that time, she moved to Fair Oaks in Wadena, where she had an apartment next to her son, Terry. In 2007, Terry moved to Marshall, MN, and the next year, Irene moved to Glenwood and later Osakis, to be near her daughter, Kelly. When Irene needed help with her daily care, she moved to an assisted living apartment and ultimately to Knute Nelson nursing home in Alexandria, where she passed away on January 2, 2014.
Irene is survived by her son, George W. (Marsha) Skon of Brookings, S.D., and her daughter, Kelly J. (Matt) Allen of Osakis, MN; 5 grandchildren, Magdalena Skon, George "James" Skon, Calvin Skon, Luke (Danielle) Allen and their children, Kaleb and McKenzie, Jennifer (David) Butler and their children, Blake, Kyla and Tenley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Marie Walz; her husband, George C. Skon, Jr., a son, Terry Skon in 2008; a sister, Patricia Probst and a brother, Jim Walz.
