Irene Ethel Hahn-Wussow was born Nov. 4, 1916, to Hugo and Mathilda (Bendix) Marquardt in Redwood Falls, Minn. She was the middle of 15 children. After completing the eighth grade, she went to work for a neighbor lady doing housework and outside chores. The neighbor lady did a lot of crocheting and taught Irene to crochet.

Irene met Lawrence through church, and they were married on Dec. 8, 1935. They lived and worked on the family farm near Echo for three years, until the farm was sold. They moved to the Verndale area in September 1939, where they farmed and raised their family of seven children.

After Lawrence passed away in May 1965, Irene moved into Verndale. She worked in the activities department of what was then Shady Lane Nursing Home in Wadena. Her work varied with housework, painting and wallpapering for the elderly. She will also be remembered as a cook and waitress at West Side Café.

Irene married Carl Wussow on Aug. 17, 1968, and moved to Wadena. Later, Irene and Carl moved to New York Mills. Carl passed away in 1988, and Irene moved back to Wadena, where she lived until becoming a resident of Fair Oaks Lodge Nov. 1, 2005.

Through the years, Irene enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, quilting, painting, knitting and crocheting. While at the nursing home, she found joy in word-find pages. Most of all, she loved her family and the family parties.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo and Mathilda; husbands, Lawrence and Carl; daughter, Marcia Huizinga; son, Darold Hahn; son-in-law, Rodney Hayden; grandsons, Mike Hahn and James Lee Hahn, Jr.; great-granddaughter, Tonya Crandall; brothers, Elmer, Lester, Wilbert, Herbert, Gerald "Swede" and Warren; and sisters, Verna, Edna, Velma, Hilda, Dorothy, Elvira and Adeline.
