Ione Elizabeth Malone

The Mass of Christian Burial for Ione Elizabeth Malone will be held at 11:00a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wadena with Father Donald Wagner, Father Arlie Sowada and Father Wilfred Theisen concelebrating. Friends may call at the St. Anns Parish Center in Wadena on Thursday from 4:00-8:00p.m. with Christian Mother's Rosary at 5:00 and Parish Prayers at 6:00p.m. Visitation will resume at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Surrounded by her family, Ione passed away on April 30, 2013, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Ione was born to Peter and Rose (Klinkner) Goeden on April 13, 1927 in rural Verndale, Wadena County, MN. After graduating from Verndale High School, she received her degree in nursing at Fargo, ND.
Ione and John Dennis Malone were united in marriage on June 30, 1948 at St. Fredericks Church in Verndale. They farmed west of Bluegrass, and raised a family of eleven children. After taking a refresher course in nursing, she worked for Tri-County Hospital from 1971-1991. In 1987, they left the farm and built a new house in Wadena where they lived until 2007. At that time they moved into Humphrey Manor in Wadena where she remained until moving to the Heritage House of Sebeka in 2012.
Ione was a member of St. Huberts Parish until 1987 when they retired and moved to Wadena and joined St. Anns Parish. She was a member of the Catholic Order of Forresters, Christian Mothers, Meals on Wheels, Crisis Pregnancy Center, Mission Quilting and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, gardening, music, dancing, and family gatherings. She loved to travel and together she and John took trips to the east coast, Washington DC, the Grand Canyon, Denver CO, the Black Hills, Yellowstone, Alaska and Branson MO. She also made baby and graduation quilts for all her grandchildren to cherish. Her last quilt was completed in 2012.
Ione was preceded in death by her husband John on June 25, 2009; parents Peter and Rose; and sisters Bernice Larson and Eileen Boyer.
She is survived by her sons Lawrence (Karen) of Wadena, James (Pam) of Milaca, Alan (Shirley) of Wadena, Dean of Sebeka, Eugene (Sue) of Cold Spring and Terence (Julie) of Owatanna; daughters Julianne (Jay) Thompson of Fridley, Marilyn (Charles) Rhode of Onamia, Rosemary (Charles) Jernberg of St. Cloud, Janice (Wayne) Dertinger of Frazee and Elisabeth (John) Schmitt of Richmond; 38 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren; sisters MaryAnn Hartman of Wadena, Marcy Sharpe of New Jersey, and Lorraine Richter of Wadena; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jason Thompson, Christopher Rhode, Michael Jernberg, Ryan Malone, Dustin Dertinger, Louis Malone and Patrick Malone.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Wadena.
Arrangements are with the Schuller Family Funeral Homes of Wadena.
