Icemen rack up the miles, win one
Wadena Minnesota 314 S. Jefferson 56482

A well-traveled Wadena-Deer Creek boys hockey team returned from a two-day trip to Minnesota's Arrowhead with their first victory of the season.

Just three nights after suffering a 6-0 loss to Litchfield, Dan Savoie's Wolverines came out on top in a 3-2 victory over Greenway of Coleraine.

They moved onto the Hippodrome in Eveleth Saturday where they fell to Eveleth-Gilbert 5-2.

Taylor Bienusa came up with a playmaker against Greenway to help Brandyn Swanson, Brennan Wallace and first-year varsity player Nick LeTourneau ice WDC's first three goals of the year. Trent Wollenburg picked up a pair of assists and Logan Meyer notched one.

LeTourneau scored the game-winning goal at the 14:55 mark after Swanson and Wallace put in goals just 39 seconds apart.

Eric Stefanich sneaked a late goal past WDC netminder Tyler Muehler at the 16:22 mark. Adam Mendoza ended a scoreless battle at the 3:08 mark of the third period. He later picked up an assist on the Stefanich goal. Nick Adams was credited with two assists.

Muehler faced 39 shots in gaining the victory. Trent Guyer kicked out 17 WDC shots.

Robbie Kaldahl scored a hat trick, Dalton Johnson came up with two goals and Cole Axelson dished out four assists as the Golden Bears handed WDC their second loss in three games on Saturday.

The Golden Bears put 10 shots on goal against Muehler in the first period without scoring against the senior standout. They peppered Muehler with 22 more shots in the second period and scored three times.

It was WDC's turn to go on the offensive in period three as the Wolverines out-shot the Golden Bears 15-9. The Wolverines were down 4-0 when Wallace took a feed from Swanson and scored on the power play at the 8:13 mark. Bienusa scored his first goal of the season at 14:14 on a power play feed from Meyer.

Muehler was credited with 36 saves.

Following a 2 p.m. home match Saturday with Kittson Central, the Wolverines will travel to Park Rapids Dec. 17 and will host Red Lake Falls Dec. 19.
