Humphrey Manor to host senior wellness event Friday
Seniors looking for help staying healthy in their golden years can get connected with local resources Friday at the Humphrey Manor.
Free and open to the public, the Wellness Information for Seniors Event (WISE) will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. in the dining room.
"It's really about resources," said WISE organizer Jode Freyholtz-London, executive director of Wellness in the Woods, a Wadena County-based non-profit dedicated to wellness education and advocacy. "We found in doing a needs assessment, seniors in particular do not know what resources are available to them."
About 10 different providers, including Wadena County public health, the local crisis line and Mahube-Otwa Community Action Partnership will have representatives at WISE. One provider, Experienced Works, specializes in job training for low-income seniors.
If seniors are aware of services, it's more likely they will be able to prevent crises rather than scramble to react to them, said Freyholtz-London, a recent appointee to the Minnesota State Advisory Council on Mental Health. "It takes a lot more resources to help someone out of a crisis than if they know where to go first."
Most seniors don't use Google for information, she said, "so they don't know what's out there. We hope to give them some places to call to be healthy."
The Tri-County Health Foundation and Midstate Insurance Services provided funding for WISE.
