Huge weekend in store for Wadena
The 2010 Wadena-Deer Creek All-School Reunion will kick off four days of events on Thursday with a Town and Country Breakfast in the morning and a parade through downtown Wadena in the evening.
The Wadena Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors both events and is coordinating Summer of Fun activities that week with the reunion. Classes are invited to enter floats in the annual Summer of Fun parade. Registration for the reunion also begins on Thursday at WDC High School.
Organizers are expecting as many as 2,000 people to attend the June 17-20 reunion. The registration count was just over 1,400 on Monday morning and organizer Janice Stahl expected the number to reach 1,500 by the end of the week. Registrations are coming in "fast and furious" right now, she said.
They sent 7,000 schedules for the event out in May, said organizer Carol Taggart.
"I think it's going to be a lot of fun," Taggart said.
The main event for the reunion will take place from 5 p.m. to midnight on Saturday at Sunnybrook Park. Alumni must have a button that is included in their registration packet for admission to the event. The packet can be picked up at the high school commons. There will be music, food and fireworks.
Many activities are planned, but what people are most interested in doing is visiting and seeing old friends, Taggart said.
Planning the event has been a lot of fun and a lot of work, Stahl said.
"I'm just hoping people enjoy it," she said.
Organizers have had lots of help with the reunion, Taggart said. Even people who didn't graduate from WDC have volunteered.
If someone hasn't received a flier to register they can call Taggart at (218) 631-2099 or Stahl at (218) 631-7118.
Taggart is also asking for local people to consider taking someone in if they have any rooms in their homes available.
