Hot-shooting Pirates reach sub-section finals

Jordyn Glenz had her second double-double in a row Saturday night as the second-seeded Verndale Pirates ousted third-seeded Pine River-Backus 63-40 to reach the North Sub-Section 5A finals.

Glenz tacked up 19 points and hauled in 10 rebounds as the Pirates pushed their season record to 25-3. Shania Glenz canned five of Verndale's six treys on her way to a 15-point night. Elyssa Kern scored 11 points. The Pirates shot a sizzling 61 percent from the field hitting on 25 of 41 attempts.

The Pirates led 30-21 at the half.

The Tigers were led by Megan Felthous who scored 19 points and Megan Porta who netted 10.

Pine River-Backus ended the season with an 18-9 record.

The win kept Verndale's hopes alive for a Section 5A title game berth Friday. The North and South Sub-Section winners will meet in a 7 p.m. section championship showdown at Crosby-Ironton High School.

The Pirates got double figure scoring from Jordyn Glenz, Sarah Moenkedick and Shania Glenz Thursday as they erupted with 45 second half points to defeat Nevis in North Sub-Section 5A quarterfinal action.

The Pirates got off to a slow start as the tall Tigers tied them up inside in the first half and limited Art Schlutter's cagers to 25 points. The Pirates found themselves leading by four at the midway point.

Jordyn Glenz tacked up a team-high 19 points to go along with a dozen rebounds. Shania Glenz pumped in 17 points and Moenkedick scored 15. The Pirates shot a healthy 46 percent from the field as they converted on 24 of 52 floor shots. They also went 17 of 23 at the free throw line and hit on five of their 11 three-point shots.

Hannah Bliss led a determined Nevis scoring effort with 20 points. Megan Norby was good for 17 tallies. Jordyn Lucas tacked up 11. The Tigers shot 48 percent on Verndale's home court and made 11 of 13 free throws.
