Hornets top Pirates with treys, foul shots
The Henning Hornets showed off their shooting skills Monday night in a 68-53 Park Region Conference win at Verndale.
The Hornets hit on seven of 10 three-point shots and went 12 of 15 from the free throw line in building a 45-32 halftime lead.
Collin Dague paced the Hornets with 22 points while Zach Torgerson and Kaleb Thompson added 13 and 11 points each.
Jordan Hinkle's Pirates pulled to within eight at one point in the second half but the Hornets maintained their edge with a 23-21 scoring advantage.
The Hornets shot 56 percent from outside the three-point arc for a torrid 64 percent clip. Henning was only nine of 30 in two-point attempts but finished the night 20 for 31 at the foul line.
Aaron Denny had 12 points for Vendale while Marcos Gomez added 11 and Dallas Ehrmantraut scored nine. The Pirates converted on 42 percent of their floor shots but put up just six free throw shots.
Matt Fretham scored 26 points and Michael Grewe chipped in with 15 as the Bertha-Hewitt Bears rallied from a 28-21 halftime deficit Thursday to edge the Verndale Pirates 58-56 in a Park Region Conference game at Bertha.
The loss overshadowed a superb shooting night by the Pirates. Jordan Hinkle's squad canned seven of 11 treys for a 64 percent average, nine of 17 free throws for a 53 percent clip and 20 of 40 floor shots for a 50 percent mark.
Dallas Ehrmantraut pumped in 24 points for the Pirates while Aaron Denny added 11.
