Hornets take two from Raiders

The Frazee Hornets had too much hitting and pitching for the Raiders as they swept Steve Riewer’s Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 13-2 and 8-4 Friday in Verndale.

Cory Wokasch scattered six hits in a complete game performance as the Hornets romped in Game 1.

Grant Overland had a huge game at the No. 2 spot in the order. Overland went 4-for-5, scored four times and drove in three runs. Wokasch, batting in the No. 3 spot, drove in three runs.

Preston Riewer and Eric Blaha led the Pirates with two hits apiece.

Dillon Card was hung with the mound loss. Travis Eckel and Ethan Korfe also saw time on the hill.

The Raiders were guilty of seven errors.

Wokasch went 3-for-4, homered and drove in four runs as the Hornets completed the sweep. Andrew Wendt went 3-for-4 in the cleanup spot.

Overland went seven frames to collect the win. Overland fanned six while walking only one.

Eckel had two hits and scored twice while Mac Schluttner drove in two runs.

Mitchell Blaha went 3-for-3 and Dillon Card fired six scoreless innings as the Raiders gained a Park Region Conference split with OTC at Battle Lake.

The Bulldogs scored a solo run in the first and Weston Malmstrom made the one-run advantage stand up until the seventh when the Raiders pushed five runs home.

Card walked one and struck out eight in gaining the mound win. Card fanned OTC’s No. 3 hitter, Nick Trosdahl, three times. Malmstrom surrendered five walks while fanning six.

Andrew VanErp had a pair of hits for OTC.

Jake Trosdahl doubled and drove in three runs as the Raiders split the twinbill in Game 2.

Nick Trosdahl had a terrific game on the hill fanning 13 and giving up only two singles to Card and Zach A. Johnson. The Raiders did not score for the first six frames. Matt Lipinski drove in Eric Blaha with BHV’s lone run.

Preston Riewer and Travis Eckel split time on the mound for BHV with Riewer taking the loss. The two BHV pitchers combined for six walks.

The nightcap loss was BHV’s first of the season in conference play. Steve Riewer’s club dropped to 11-3 overall and 9-1 in the PRC. Steve Bradsteen’s Bulldogs are 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Seth Auger hit a grand slam homer as the Cardinals stopped the Raiders stopped the Raiders win streak at nine games.

Eric Kossan backed up Auger with two hits, one run and one RBI. Jalen Busker and Jordan Denning both scored twice for Staples-Motley.

Busker held the Raiders to five hits. Preston Riewer and Zach A. Johnson both went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Eric Blaha was hung with the mound loss.

The victory gave the Cardinals a 5-8 season mark.
