Homecoming week full of fun
By Dana Pavek
Wadena-Deer Creek’s Homecoming Week was “pawsome”! The week kicked off with a pep fest at the middle/high school, organized by the WDC student councils. The pep fest featured games, updates from fall sports captains and a chance for the cheerleaders to show off their talents with stunts and cheers. The Homecoming court for 2013 were announced and included queen candidates: Brandee Bly, Ella Harrison, Paige Hartman, Heather Theisen and Hope Theisen; and the king candidates included: Nick Carlson, Jacob Goeden, Austin Hendershot, Isaac Laughlin and Wyatt Weber.
Students and staff participated in dress-up days during the week and had fun getting into it! At the middle/high school, the themes included: Hillbilly Day, Teacher/Staff/Student Switch Day and Fake An Injury Day. The elementary and middle/high school both had a Color Day and Blue/Gold Day. On Wednesday afternoon, grades 9 through 12 students enjoyed a pleasant afternoon outdoors for the Powder Puff football games. On Thursday, elementary students enjoyed an autograph session featuring fall sports athletes, followed by a pep fest in the gym. The elementary students are a spirited bunch, cheering with enthusiastic Wolverine pride! The cheerleaders once again performed their amazing stunt routines and cheers while the homecoming court was introduced, followed by games, including a tug-of-war pitting the teachers against the homecoming candidates.
On Friday morning, the coronation program finally arrived! 2012 Homecoming Queen Macy Hartman crowned the king and queen in dramatic fashion. Nick Carlson was crowned homecoming king and Hope Theisen was crowned queen. The weather looked iffy with on and off rain, but the parade did go on Friday afternoon! Blue and gold filled the streets of Wadena and the WDC Marching Band and parade marshals Bruce and Joyce Uselman anchored the parade. The football team, unfortunately, lost against state-ranked Upsala-Swanville Area on Friday night, but a good crowd was on hand to support the Wolverines. The week ended with the senior high Homecoming dance in the Commons.
Thank you to WDC Student Councils and co-advisors Holly Becker and Mike Ortmann for organizing a fun-filled week. Thank you to everyone who supported WDC’s homecoming week activities.
