Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative invited sophomores and juniors from the local area to compete for a chance to win a free five-day trip to Washington, D.C. Two students will be selected to join about 1,500 others from across the country at the nation's capital June 11-16.

The Minnesota delegation of about 35 teens, each sponsored by local electric cooperatives, will tour the national museums and monuments, the Smithsonian Institute and Arlington Cemetery. They will also visit with local legislators, attend an all-states session about government and business, take an evening cruise on the Potomac River and see a major theatre production.

To participate in the contest students must submit to the cooperative office a one-page, typewritten essay explaining why they would want to visit the capital city. The essays, which must be received at the cooperative office by Feb. 25, will be ranked by the quality of the writing and reasoning. Up to 15 finalists will continue in the interview portion of the competition, tentatively scheduled on March 8 at the cooperative office. A panel of judges will select the two winners based on the content of the students' responses to questions and the poise demonstrated during the interviews. Appointment times and further details will be mailed to each qualifying contestant.

To be eligible, students must be sophomores or juniors from one of these school districts: Bertha-Hewitt, Browerville, Eagle Valley, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Menahga, Sebeka, Staples, Verndale or Wadena-Deer Creek. Essays must be received at the cooperative office by Feb. 25 and must be labeled with the student's name, school, grade level, home address and telephone number(s). They may be sent via e-mail (preferred) at todd-wad@toddwadena.coop, by fax at (218) 631-4188 or mail, P.O. Box 431, Wadena, MN 56482.
