The Wadena City Council and WDC school faculty discussed ways to resolve high school parking and traffic for their temporary site at M State during the Monday, Aug. 23 budget meeting for fiscal year 2011.

"Right now we're just trying to get parking, period," WDC Superintendent Virginia Dahlstrom said.

City Council member Don Niles said permits may be necessary to make sure only high school students use the designated WDC parking, because M State students might be tempted to use the free high school parking during spring semester to avoid their own college parking fees.

Niles motioned to convert 4th Street from Dayton Avenue to Franklin Avenue to be a one-way street in order to facilitate parking and to issue parking permits for high school students, residents of the neighborhood and residents' guests.

City Council member Toby Pierce said that charging a fee for high school parking permits would not go over well with the public.

"You're going to get a lot of phone calls," he said.

Dahlstrom said that if students had to pay for parking permits, they may park elsewhere for free.

Niles said that if permits are given out for free, students may abuse them and give them to just anyone.

Dahlstrom said that a nominal fee should be charged for the printing of the Wolverine claw permits, and that the fee would be waived in case of financial hardship.

Niles said he agreed with the solution to charge a small parking fee over the two years for high school classes to be held at M State.

The motion passed unanimously with Mayor Wayne Wolden abstaining.
