Hartman recipient of ExCEL Award
Wadena-Deer Creek High School junior Macy Hartman is a recipient of the 2012 Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership (ExCEL) Award.
Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, ExCEL is a recognition program specifically for Minnesota high school juniors. Students who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens in their community are eligible for the award.
ExCEL Award recipients are selected through a process that involves Minnesota State High School League member schools and an independent panel of judges of judges from schools throughout Minnesota. WDC High School nominated Hartman for the award.
Hartman participates in girls' tennis, basketball and serves as sports manager for the boys' tennis team. In girls' tennis, she's received the Gold Academic Award, Best Record Award, Hustle Award, served as varsity captain, and received all-conference honorable mention. In girls' basketball, she received the Gold Academic award.
Her fine-arts activities include marching band, pep band, jazz band and Minnesota Band Directors Association band. She's competed in flute solo and ensemble contests, where she has received excellent ratings. She's served as first chair in her flute section for the past two years.
Hartman's school activities include National Honor Society, Yearbook staff, Business Professionals of America, Peer Mentor, Basketball Buddies coach, choir accompanist and homecoming coronation accompanist. She's consistently been on the A-Honor Roll since ninth grade.
Her community and volunteer service include blood drive volunteer, music teacher/helper and girls' basketball summer camp coach/helper. She is an active volunteer in her church serving as church choir lead accompanist and a member of the church choir. In addition, Hartman volunteered many hours helping with cleanup in Wadena after the June 17, 2010 tornado.
The ExCEL award recognizes leadership as part of its award criteria and students are asked to write their definition of leadership.
"Leadership, to me, means someone has the strength and courage to be themselves, by putting their ideas into actions and by doing what they believe is right, even if they're alone. If you follow your heart, and do what is right, others will follow you," said Hartman.
WDC High School Band Director Lisa Weniger provided a letter of recommendation on how Hartman positively influences others. Here is an excerpt: "I have known Macy for five years as her band director. During this time, I have found Macy to be a very dedicated individual in every aspect of her life. She is a student that not only excels academically, but excels in other activities as well. ... She is always encouraging other band members and members of her section and willing to show other flute members how to play something. She brings good ideas and suggestions to the table which no one is afraid to try."
Macy will be recognized at halftime of the State Girls' Basketball Championship in March. She is the daughter of Bill and Debbie Hartman of Wadena.
