Harriet Wilma Pokorney, 89, passed away June 11, 2009, at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena.
She was born April 17, 1920, to Erwin and Edna (Erdmann) Ehlke of Oak Valley Township. She graduated from high school and attended St. Cloud Teachers College. She married Charles George Pokorney on June 25, 1944, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertha and together they operated the family farm near Wrightstown.
In addition to caring and providing a home for her own family, she served her community as a teacher, daycare provider and foster grandparent. Most knew her simply as Grandma Harriet. She also worked as a cosmetologist. She served her church as a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church's Ladies Aid. During her quiet time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed entertaining in her home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 16, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertha with the Rev. Blake Rickbeil presiding. Honorary pallbearers were Ryan Wade and Beth Wade. Pallbearers were Patrick Pokorney, Jeff Pokorney, Hope Kassube, Hillary Kassube, Devin Pokorney and Jordan Pokorney. Interment was in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery at Bertha. Domian-Anderson Funeral Home (www.domian-anderson.com) was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her daughters, Beth (Merle) Kassube of Maple Grove and KayLynn (Mike) Pokorney of Lino Lakes; son, John (Judy) of Bertha; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Violet Wohlert of Wadena; and 10 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, on May 26, 1970; parents, Erwin and Edna; daughter, Rosemary Ann Wade on Jan. 23, 1986; and sisters, Erna Hartung and Rosemary Beebe.
