Goldie F. Smith, 92, of Wadena, passed away April 20, 2009, at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena, with family at her side.
She was born Jan. 26, 1917 at Albert Lea, Minn., to Charles and Gertie (DeVilbiss) Batterson. She married Leonard Smith in Staples on July 5, 1935. This union was blessed with give daughters. She and Leonard farmed in the Wadena area until they moved to town in 1971. She enjoyed farming, gardening, dancing, cooking, playing cards with friends and neighbors, and in later years, at Wadena Senior Citizens Center. She was also very active in the neighborhood's Homemakers Club. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, in the United Methodist Church in Wadena with the Rev. Shirley Nelson officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Mike, Brad and Steve Kneisl, Scott and Jim Rude, Mike Rosler, Rick Schoenrock, and Jim Swedberg. Interment will be in the Wadena Cemetery. Survivors include four daughters, Glorine (Ray) Rosler of Minneapolis, Joyce (Ken) Leslie of Alexandria, Shirley (Duane) Kneisl of Bertha, and Carol (Denny) Rude of Wadena; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and sister Mary Utermarck of Washington.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leonard; mother and father, Charles and Gertie; daughter, Betty Jean; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers and one sister.
