Golden Gloves event a real treat

A packed house of boxing fans witnessed some great bouts at the Wadena Armory Saturday night.

The main event saw Wadena's Superheavy Jose Perez facing a strong Tommy Ray of Fargo. The action was non-stop all three rounds. Ray won a close decision. In the semi-main event, Wadena's 145 lb. John Johnson used his ring skills to score a win over a tough Joey Budzliek, of Fargo. Wadena's new superheavy Elliot Stoll had a busy bout with St. Cloud's Jesse Formanek. Stoll lost in the third round.

The boxing crowd was in for an outstanding bout between Shannon Perez (122 lbs.) from Grand Forks and Diamond Tello from Willmar. Perez was a 2013 Jr. National Champion. This was a rematch from when Perez beat Tello in the National finals for the title. Both girls threw non-stop punches all three rounds and the busier Tello won the decision. Both girls are 13 years old.

Wadena's Joe Mench faced a strong Avery Miller of St. Cloud. at 178 lbs., Mench lost the close decision. Conditioning was a factor.

Fargo's Kira Ollila, originally from Verndale, who boxed for Wadena and now goes to school in Fargo had one of the best bouts of the night as Ollila, at 155 lbs., faced Amber Castellano of Willmar. Ollila won a hard bout decision.

Wadena's Margaret Mahling (112 lbs), boxed her first bout against Nicole Gresma of Minneapolis. For a first bout, Mahling did a great job losing a close decision.

In a 140 lb. bout Joshua Johnson of St. Cloud won the decision over Lorenz Hanson from Fargo. A smooth Ben Vue, of Minneapolis won a decision over Guillermo Perez of Fargo in the 118 lb. bout.

Wadena's three boxers are in the making for a boxing card Saturday, Jan. 18 in Hibbing. Jose Perez, Joe Mench and John Johnson hope to be matched.

The next Wadena card at the Armory is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8 with bouts beginning at 7:30 p.m.
