God is in our public schools

I’ve read once too often how God isn’t present in our public schools. As a teacher in the public schools for 36 years, I can say that nothing is farther from the truth.

God is present in the teacher who sits in a student’s desk after school and prays that things will improve for that student. He is present in the staff who make sure children have milk, winter coats and school supplies. He is present in the children who make the effort to include everyone in play and activities. He is present when elementary students collect pennies to buy a goat for someone in Africa, or when high school students start a food shelf so their peers don’t go hungry. He’s present when parents send in money for their child’s field trip and include extra in case someone else in the class can’t afford it. He’s present when volunteers donate their time and talents. He’s present when a teacher plans a birthday party for a child who’s never had one.

These are just a few of the many examples I could name. God’s not in our public schools? Nothing could be farther from the truth.
