Funeral services were held for Gary Schoon age 79, of Henning, Minnesota on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek, Minnesota, with Pastor Paul Yearyean officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Darleen Wendt. The pallbearers were Craig Isakson, Robert Isakson, Jerry Tandoc, Christopher Tandoc, Derek Anderson, and Zachrey A. Johnson. The honorary pallbearers were Edward Schoon, John Schoon, Jamie Isakson and Tim ODell. Military Honors were provided by Minnesota Army National Guard, Honor Guard, Moorhead, Minnesota. Gary was laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery, Deer Creek, Minnesota.

Gary Allen Schoon was born on August 15, 1934 in Driscoll, North Dakota. His parents were the late Ernest Altman and Bertha "Peggy" Margaretha (Petersen) Schoon. Gary attended school in Ashby, Minnesota and was employed on the family farm. He served with the United States Army from March 22, 1956 to September 12, 1957. Gary was employed with his brother, Ervin as a mechanic at a farm repair shop in Dalton, Minnesota. For a brief time, Gary was married and blessed with two daughters, Peggy Ann and Lucinda. Gary was employed with Bell Telephone where he plowed telephone cable and set poles. On June 26, 1971 Gary was united in marriage with Alice Elaine Blume at Trinity Lutheran Church in Staples, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Edward and John. The Schoons made their home in Hawley, Minnesota where Gary was employed with MN DOT. In 1973, they moved to Wadena, Minnesota where Gary continued his employment with MN DOT, retiring in 1995. Together Gary and Alice enjoyed their retirement home on Leaf Lake. Gary enjoyed fishing, gardening and was an RSVP for Ottertail County.

Gary passed away at Perham Health in Perham, Minnesota on January 12, 2014. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Preceding Gary in death were his parents; sister, LaNore Hanson; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Schoon and Carol Schoon.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Alice Schoon of Henning; daughters: Peggy Ann (Jamie) Isakson of Detroit Lakes; Cindy (Tim) ODell of Peoria, Arizona; sons: Edward (Christine) Schoon of Pelican Rapids; and John (Deana) Schoon of Henning; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers: Ervin (Ellen) Schoon of Underwood; James (Judy) Schoon of Fergus Falls; Billy (Beverly) Schoon of Erhard; Keith (Bonnie) Schoon of West Fargo, North Dakota; brother-in-law, Reynold Hanson of Fergus Falls; many other relatives and a host of friends.
