Wadena-Deer Creek High School will be hosting a free book fair during the week of March 7-10 at WDC Elementary School, thanks to a Twin Cities school.

According to WDC Media Specialist, Loni Niles, this book fair is different because every book is going to be given away - that's right, a free book fair. High school students and the community are welcome to come and browse the tables, taking any books they'd like to have. The free books were part of a high school library collection from a Twin Cities school that closed.

"They heard about the tornado destroying our library, so they sold us their collection for a very small fee," explained Niles. "We have gone through each book determining which ones to add to our own collection and now we are offering our students and the community a chance at the books."

Niles said many of the books are old, or in poor condition.

"Because the school that closed was a parochial school, there are many religious books available," said Niles. "However, there are also many books that are a lot of other subject matters available, including some classics. Some of the books are still in good shape."

Unfortunately, there are no children's books available for K-6 students; however, Niles is encouraging students in grades 7 to 12 to stop by the book fair.

"But they must promise to read the books they take," Niles said with a smile.

Niles said there is no limit to how many books students or the public can take, so there is an advantage to coming early. The book fair will begin on March 7 and is located downstairs at the garden level of the elementary school where the high school library is now located. The book fair will be open during parent/teacher conferences and during school hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bags and boxes will be available for "shoppers" on a first-come basis.

Books that remain at the end of the book fair will be boxed up and donated to the public library's "Friends of the Library" book sale.
