Francis Nicholas (Mannie) Schmith

Francis Nicholas "Mannie" Schmith, died peacefully at home on February 4, 2014 at the age of 80.

Francis was born August 12, 1933 to Nick and Emma (Geber) Schmith in Wadena. He grew up on a farm in Wadena and graduated from high school in 1951. He worked in South Dakota from 1951 - 1954. He joined the Army in 1954 and was stationed in Germany until 1956. He returned to Minnesota and worked for Northwestern Bell until his retirement in Brainerd in 1992.

He married Patricia Vorderbruggen in 1960 and moved to Brainerd.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; daughters, Teresa (Joel) Hyytinen, Colleen (Tim) Fafinski; son, Dean (Tracy) Schmith; grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Hyytinen; Will, Danny, Abby, Joey and Jimmy Fafinski. He is also survived by two sisters, Beaty Larson and Betty (Clyde) Bigelow and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Matti Hyytinen and siblings, Andrew, Bud, Marcella Lubke, Mary Ann Nelson and infant brother, Kenneth.

Francis enjoyed hunting, fishing, coaching baseball, hockey and playing cards with friends. He shared his sense of humor with those he loved.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2014 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Brainerd with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. Military Honors provided by the Brainerd VFW Post 1647 Color Guard.
