Four turnovers sink Wolverines
Turnovers were the downfall of the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines last Friday as they gave up the ball four times in a 28-6 loss to Breckenridge.
The Cowboys cashed in three times in the second quarter on a 42-yard run by speedster Stephen Erlandson, a 42-yard fumble return by Joe Johnson and a one-yard plunge by Walker Busse.
Tom VanErp's Wolverines countered with a 30-yard scoring aerial from Kevin Tumberg to Taylor Bienusa.
The Cowboys capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when Chandler Holzbauer went over from two yards out.
Turnovers have stung the Wolverines in all three of their early season losses. An overtime interception set up Park Rapids' winning touchdown in a 13-7 opening season loss. The Wolverines gave the ball away four times in their 55-37 loss to Warroad. WDC head coach Tom VanErp feels the real damage done by the turnovers has been psychological.
"They've hurt us in the sense that they've ended what have been pretty good drives," VanErp said.
WDC's Aaron Kern gained 93 yards on 21 carries after back-to-back 100-yard games against Park Rapids and Warroad.
Tumberg connected on six of his 20 passes for 108 yards. Tumberg now has five touchdown passes for the season.
His top receiver was Jordan Rentz who caught two passes for 55 yards.
Jared Toedter was WDC's top defensive player with nine tackles and six assists. Kern and Dane Hoffman combined for 12 solos and two assists. Bienusa and Rentz combined for eight tackles and six assists.
The Wolverines will host Staples-Motley in a 7 p.m. Homecoming game Friday.
