Four forfeits help stop Wolverines' streak
It took an outbreak of strep, an injury and a strong Frazee club to knock Wadena-Deer Creek out of the unbeaten ranks Tuesday at WDC Elementary.
The Hornets, who have been ranked No. 2 in Class A this season, posted a 53-15 victory over the Wolverines.
Competing in their first dual on their home mats, the Wolverines gave up four weights on forfeits. Mitch Steffens and Jared Wegscheid were sidelined by illness while Jacob Wegscheid was nursing a shoulder injury after a heavy weekend of action in the Big Bear Tournament.
Sam Waln gave the Wolverines a comeback victory at 103 as he defeated Austin Skillings 10-8 on a late takedown. Skillings held a 5-0 lead early in the match.
Josh Lawson celebrated a 6-0 victory over John Gies at 119. Lawson had never defeated the Frazee wrestler.
WDC's Tony Reurink was a 6-3 winner over Nate Sandberg at 215 and Dylan Anderson racked up another pin in defeating Tyler Hanson at the 4:57 mark of their heavyweight match.
The Wolverines go into the Christmas break with a 6-1 record. Norm Gallant will take his team back into action Jan. 6 with a dual at Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale.

Wolverines place fifth in Big Bear
Six Wadena-Deer Creek wrestlers finished in the top eight Saturday to help the Wolverines capture fifth-place honors on the Big Bear Tournament at Cass Lake.
Mitch Steffens paced the Wolverines with a runner-up finish at 119. Steffens became the 21st wrestler in WDC mat history to record 100 career victories when he pinned Aitkin's Jared Novak. Abbot Aho of Fergus Falls stopped Steffens' championship bid with a 7-2 decision.
WDC's Sam Waln was 4-1 at 103, Tony Reurink was 6-2 at 215 and Dylan Anderson was 5-2 at heavyweight as they earned fifth place honors.
Waln beat BGMR's Ryan Bergerson 5-3 for his fifth-place time. Reurink had two pins and two majors in placing fifth.
"Our young sophomores really impressed me this weekend," WDC head coach Norm Gallant said.
Both were a little less than .500 last year but you could see them coming on at the end of the year."
Anderson ran his team-best pin total to 10 in grabbing a fifth in the heavyweight class. Anderson edged Staples-Motley's David DeYonge 6-5 in his final match.
Jordan Rentz joined Steffens in gaining his 100th career victory. The 135-pounder won four of his six matches including a 7-1 victory over Willlmar's Seth Pollack for seventh.
WDC 145-pounder Jacob Wegscheid finished the tournament 3-3 and earned eighth place.
Fergus Falls won the tournament with 188 points while Badger/Greenbush-Middle River scored 167.5, Thief River Falls/Goodridge racked up 166.5, Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector collected 143.5 and Wadena-Deer Creek scored 136.5.
Last year's WDC wrestling team placed 13th in the gigantic Big Bear.
"This is a tough, tough tournament and to place in the top five in a good accomplishment," Gallant said.
