Herman is a part-time director of advancement at the M State Detroit Lakes Area College Foundation and will also be working part-time with the Wadena Area College Foundation. Herman has an extensive background in non-profit fundraising, including work for the Fargo-Moorhead United Way, National Multiple Sclerosis Society and other community based non-profits. Herman is replacing Nikki Hirschey, who resigned after leading the foundation from September 2008 until June 2010. The WACF was incorporated in fall 2007.

The purpose of the WACF is to raise funds from donors including faculty, staff, alumni and the greater business community to help support student scholarships. The WACF has given out approximately $28,000 in student scholarhips in 2009 and an additional $13,000 year to date in 2010. This past year, the WACF also raised about $20,000 to support the reinstallation of an Electrical Line Workers substation on the ELW field on the south side of Wadena. The sub-station was donated by the Itasca-Mantrap Electric Cooperative with labor donations from Lake Region Electric Cooperative and the Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative. The addition of the ELW sub-station has helped to make the ELW program one of the premier programs for student line worker degrees in the country.
