Caddy (Dornath) Rowland published "Gastien Part 1: The Cost of the Dream" in August with Amazon Createspace, and her second book is set to be released in December.

Rowland, who currently lives in St. Paul, said she always wanted to write. She has 20 years of advertising experience which she uses to promote her book.

"Part 1 is really about Gastien's coming of age," Rowland said.

The character Gastien Beauchamp grows up on a farm in France with an abusive father, but holds onto his dream of becoming an artist and has to leave home at 18. In Paris, he wants to own an art studio during the 19th century when it was near impossible for peasants to own property.

"There's also some romance and quite a bit of sex in there because he does also want to be the greatest lover in France," Rowland said.

She said she has had good feedback on the book both men and women, and wanted to make the character endearing but flawed and realistic.

She said she also researched the internet to be able to write the historical setting more accurately.

Caddy (Dornath) Rowland attended Wadena Junior High School in the late 1960s, during eighth grade and part of ninth grade, where she enjoyed writing poetry.

At that time, the high school destroyed by the June 17 tornado was fairly new, but the junior high students stayed behind in the original old high school building which was eventually taken down in the early 1990s.

Rowland said she doesn't know people's married names now, but her best friends at the time were Connie Johnson and Jackie Wishman.

Rowland's family moved several times in Minnesota since her father worked for the federal government, and after Wadena they moved to Wheaton where she met her husband in high school. She was in the class of 1973, and since graduation the couple has lived in the Twin Cities.

Rowland said that self-publishing has become more common and more accepted in recent years.

Rowland's book can be found on the Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites and is available in physical paperback as well as Kindle and Nook. She has a Facebook page for the character Gastien Beauchamp.

She said she would like to hear from old classmates, and her email is caddyauthor@yahoo.com
