Five Wings Arts Council announces grant recipients in five area counties

The Five Wings Arts Council, one of 11 regional arts councils throughout Minnesota, recently awarded grant funding for individual artists, schools and arts organizations in Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena Counties. The Five Wings Arts Council board of directors serves as the review panel for all eligible applications. Board members include: Cass County, Kathryn Lohr and Bill Hansen; Crow Wing County, Laura Busch, Pat Dullum and Sandra Johnson; Morrison County, Catherine Stoch and Lynn Houle-Bushinger; Todd County, Peg Churchwell and Ann Finch; Wadena County, Bernie Nelsen and Jamie Robertson.

Two Long Prairie area student artists received mentorship awards. Delaney Churchwell, daughter of Peg and Tim Churchwell, will study creative writing with mentor David Bengtson. Caleb Anderson, son of David and Therese Anderson, will work on the upright bass with mentor Daniel O'Bryant.

General Operating Grants of $2,500 each were awarded to the Crossing Arts Alliance in Brainerd and the Longville Lakes Arts Alliance.

School Arts Projects Grants were awarded to the Eagle View Elementary School in Pequot Lakes for Reader's Theater activities ($680) and the Staples Motley High School ($1,110) for a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker Arts Center.

Community Arts Access Project Grants support a variety of arts related activities in communities throughout the area. The following applicants were awarded project grants: The Crossing Arts Alliance, Brainerd, $4,950; From Age to Age, Nisswa, $3,570; Great River Arts Association, Little Falls, $5,000; Heartland Symphony Orchestra, Little Falls, $4,520; Lakes Area Chamber Music Festival, Brainerd, $5,000; Lamplighter Community Theatre, Staples, $5,000; Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota, Baxter, $4,590; Long Prairie Chamber Orchestra, Long Prairie, $1,360; Longville Lakes Arts Alliance, Longville, $4,900; Old Wadena Society, Wadena, $5,000; St. Francis Music Center, Little Falls, received support for three projects totaling $3,200; USA Community Chorus, Swanville, $3,500; Whiskey Creek Film Festival, Wadena, $5,000.

Individual artists received funding in two categories: Apprentice Level and Artisan Level. Apprentice Level grants support learning opportunities while Artisan Level grants are project based. At the Apprentice Level, opportunities were supported for: Beverly Abear of Baxter, literary arts, $750; Martha Davidge of Cross Lake, watercolor, $750; Carolina Warner of Brainerd, fiber arts, $1,000. At the Artisan Level: Luthier Bob Gatts of Cushing, $1,910; Lavender Hunt of Walker, traditional functional cultural arts, $2,000; Richard Lozier of Little Falls, painting, $1,990; Heidi Steadman of Little Falls, book arts and painting, $1,950.

Applications for these grant programs are reviewed three times per year with deadlines of Jan. 15, May 15 and Sept. 15. Small grant applications and student artist/mentor applications are accepted at any time. Nomination letters for Master Artist recognition will be accepted through March 15.
