Five Wings Arts Council announces grant awards

The Five Wings Arts Council, one of 11 regional arts councils throughout Minnesota, recently awarded grant funding for individual artists, schools and arts organizations in Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena Counties.

The Five Wings Arts Council board of directors serves as the review panel for all eligible applications. Funding for the individual artist grants is provided by the McKnight Foundation. Funding to support arts organizations and their activities as well as schools and communities comes from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota.

One area student artist received a mentorship award. Toby Deuel of Pillager will study clay and ceramics with mentor Kevin Matthews of Brainerd.

Individual artists receive funding in two categories: Apprentice Level and Artisan Level. Apprentice Level grants support learning opportunities while Artisan Level grants are project based. There were no awards granted at the Apprentice Level. At the Artisan Level: Theresa Jarvela, Brainerd, $710, literary arts; Cyrus Swan, Pine River, $1,870, ceramics; Vonnie Tuomala, Staples, $1,980, painting. General Operating Grants of $2,500 each were awarded to the Central Minnesota Boys Choir; Lamplighter Community Theatre, Staples; Madhatter's Community Theatre, Wadena; Northwoods Arts Council, Hackensack; Screen Porch Productions, Outing; Staples Area Men's Chorus and the Staples Motley Area Arts Council.

School Arts Projects Grants were awarded to the Freshwater Education District's Gifted, Creative and Talented Department ($4,410) for visual arts workshops; Northland Community Schools ISD 118 in Remer ($5,000) for traditional Ojibwe drumming and singing classes; Staples Elementary School ($5,000) for the After School Art Adventures program.

Community Arts Access Project Grants support a variety of arts related activities in communities throughout the area. The following applicants were awarded project grants: Boys and Girls Clubs of Morrison County, $4,500; Central Lakes College Theatre Department, $2,100; Crossing Arts Alliance, Brainerd, $4,050 for two projects; Encore Arts, Brainerd, $470; Heartland Symphony, Little Falls, $4,550; Long Prairie Chamber Orchestra, $1,350; Madhatters Community Theatre, Wadena, $3,200; Menahga Arts Guild, $3,000; Motley's Two Rivers Music Fest, $5,000; Northwoods Arts Council, Hackensack, $2,500; Pillager School Community Education, $1,800; St. Francis Music Center, Little Falls, $1,950; Staples Area Men's Chorus, $4,010; USA Community Chorus, Swanville, $2,500; Wadena Area Concert Band, $1,350; Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Community Education, $4,600; Verndale Community Education, $1,900.

Two Small Grants were awarded for first-time applicants or late-breaking opportunities. These were awarded to the Central Minnesota Boys Choir and Longville Lakes Arts Alliance.

Applications for these grant programs are reviewed three times per year with deadlines of Jan. 15, May 15 and Sept. 15.
