Five seniors back for WDC tennis season
Seniors Maddy Hinojos, Elise Kallevig, Erin Johnson, Macy Folkestad and Tabby Baker will help new head coach Katrina Wahlin provide leadership for the Wadena-Deer Creek tennis team this season.
Hinojos is tabbed to play singles while Folkestad swings between singles and doubles. Johnson, Kallevig and Baker are all regarded as doubles players.
Rounding out this year's team are sophomores Sarah Moen, McKayla Woods, Nicole Miller and Liz Peterson (doubles), Whitney Eickhoff (singles) and Jess Rondestvedt and Larissa Maisio (singles and doubles).
Freshmen who Wahlin wants to use as singles players include Lindy Jones and Abby Westrum.
The Wolverines expect eighth-grader Grace Hinojos to play doubles and classmate Shawna Claussen to play singles.
"Our team has great chemistry which is going to help us with the top opponents we play," Wahlin said.
Graduation cost the Wolverines the services of Paige Hartman and Abby Wegscheid. Hartman played singles for the Wolverines while Wegscheid saw a lot of doubles action.
The Wolverines also have Abby Westrum back for the 2014 season. Westrum was used at No. 2 singles last year.
The Wolverines finished the season with a 5-9 record and placed sixth in the Mid-State Conference tournament. They drew Section 8A runner-up Park Rapids in the first round of section team play and lost a 7-0 decision to the Panthers. The Panthers were ousted by Staples-Motley 4-3 in the section finals.
The Wolverines have simple and straightforward team goals this season.
"Our team goals will be to win more matches this year and advance more individual players to the section tournament," Wahlin said. "I believe with the team we have this year and how hard our girls have been working this summer, these goals are very attainable."
Wahlin rates Park Rapids, Staples-Motley and Pequot Lakes as the teams to watch in the conference and the section this season.
