Fergus Falls doubles up on Wadena-Deer Creek girls
A young and talented Fergus Falls girls' basketball team trounced Brian Silbernick's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 65-31 Tuesday in the Otter Holiday Classic.
The tournament's final first round game saw the Otters reel of 13 unanswered points in the opening minutes of play with a press that kept the Wolverines far from the basket.
Fergus Falls head coach Josh Mohagen got 19 points from 6-2 sophomore Mariah Monke and 10 more from senior Emily Olson.
Courtney Volkmann was the only WDC cager to crack double figures with 15 points.
"They've got good size and shooting," Silbernick said in praise of the Otters. "They were aggressive on the boards and their press hurt us right away."
The Otters had the added incentive of 59-56 overtime loss to the Wolverine JV team earlier in the day.
Kelsi Crawford led the Wolverines on the boards with five. Volkmann dished out three assists.
The Otters, who play in the Central Lakes Conference, won for the fifth straight time.
Silbernick and the Wolverines were playing in the Fergus Falls gym for the first time. The Wolverines, who had not played a game since Dec. 21, lost for the fourth straight time.
The Otters earned the right to face Fargo North in the tournament finals. The Wolverines drew Faribault in the third place game.
