FCCLA students raising awareness about childhood cancer with local fundraiser
In August 2013, Gage and Jace Maloney were born and diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer called neuroblastoma. The identical twin boys are the sons of Lynsey and Casey Maloney of Deer Creek.
At that point, WDC eighth-graders Hayley Maloney, Caitlin Savage and Lyndsay Frisch decided that they would like to do a FCCLA STAR Event project on that topic.
“Their goal was to become more informed about neuroblastoma, inform their peers and raise money to donate to research on preventing childhood cancer," said Cindi Koll, FCCLA co-advisor.
With the help of other WDC FCCLA members, they designed gold-colored T-shirts with an inspirational saying “Go Gold for Gage and Jace” to sell. They’ve sold over 50 so far and hope to sell 50 more before the end of the school year.
“All of the proceeds are going to the Minneapolis Children's Hospital Foundation,” said Hayley Maloney.
The students created a display to show what they have learned about neuroblastoma and have presented to classmates. They plan to present to the fourth-grade classes on April 7 at WDC Elementary.
