Wadena-Deer Creek Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members Shania Lannes, Hope Norenberg and Angela Torkkola applied and were accepted to be a part of the Minnesota FCCLA Legislative Shadow Day at the Capitol last week. FCCLA adviser Cindi Koll accompanied the students.
Twenty FCCLA members from throughout the state participated in the event.
The members took part in training with state FCCLA staff in the morning, and then spent four hours shadowing a Minnesota state senator or representative.
Lannes shadowed Sen. Tom Saxhaug, DFL-Grand Rapids, Norenberg shadowed Sen. Chuck Wiger, DFL-Maplewood, and Torkkola shadowed Sen. Melisa Franzen, DFL-Edina.
The girls found the experience to be informative, as the event fell during a busy time for the legislators.
“I loved shadowing Melisa Franzen. I got to attend committee meetings with her. She was very interested in the FCCLA Financial Fitness project,” Torkkola said.
Lannes and Norenberg also enjoyed the opportunity.
“It was really interesting. I got to go to the Domestic Violence Rally at the Capitol. I also got to listen to bills being read and voted on,” Norenberg said.
