Family Planning celebrates 40 years
Otter Tail-Wadena Community Action Council Family Planning program began as a private physician system in March 1969 providing Family Planning services to low-income individuals in the area.
In September 1981, the program converted to a mobile clinic based operation serving more patients and containing costs. Today the OTWCAC Family Planning nursing staff are based in three locations: Perham, Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes. Nurses travel to mobile clinic sites in the communities of Menahga, Wadena, Pine River, Pelican Rapids, Walker, Long Prairie, Morris and Wheaton, providing education and Family Planning services. These endeavors could not be met without the collaboration of eight public health agencies, more than 25 physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and certified nurse midwives. OTWCAC Family Planning has 4,000-plus visits per year, provides education sessions to 3,000-5,000 community members, and attends many health fairs in central Minnesota.
In celebration of this milestone, OTWCAC Family Planning will have an open house in Fergus Falls at 133 South Mill Street (across from the Post Office) from 3-7 p.m. on Nov. 23. Everyone is welcome. With questions, call (877) 275-6123.
