EVELYN EMMA KERN
Evelyn Emma Kern, 92, of Park Rapids, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.
Evelyn Emma Smith was born to Jackson and Emma (Beving) Smith March 31, 1921 at Doran, in Wilkin County. At the age of 12, she moved with her family to Hewitt.
She graduated from Hewitt High School and went on to St. Cloud Teachers College where she received her teaching degree in elementary education. She taught in Hewitt, Bertha and in the Orono district after they moved to Long Lake in 1961. She also did a lot of private tutoring after moving to Long Lake and enjoyed over 40 years of teaching.
On June 11, 1943 she married Vernon Kern in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Hewitt. They were blessed with three wonderful sons, Jack, Michael and Mark.
Both Evelyn and Vernon retired from their careers in 1983 and spent their summers at their lake home near Park Rapids and their winters in a retirement park in McAllen, Texas.
Evelyn enjoyed gardening, mostly flowers, and supplied many floral arrangements to the Presbyterian Church, when they lived in Long Lake, for over 20 years. She also enjoyed doing many crafts, league bowling, shuffling, teaching line dancing, choral singing and singing in a gospel mixed quartet while in Texas.
In 2005, she moved into Summerfield Apartments and remained there until April, 2013 when she moved to Heritage Living Center.
She was active in the Riverside United Methodist Church, the hospital auxiliary and as a volunteer in the hospital.
She is survived by her sons, Jack (Mary) of Morris, Michael (Christina) of Apple Valley, and Mark (Lynn) of Slinger, Wis.; three grandsons, Michael Jr. (Aimee); Christian and Taylor; two granddaughters, Mandy and Kaitlyn; two great-granddaughters, Krysha and Mattea; brother, Richard; sister-in-law, Donna; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband on June 9, 1999, two days before their 56th wedding anniversary, her parents; brother, George; and sister, Mary.
Funeral service: 2 p.m. Monday, July 8 at Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids. Pastor Lee Kantonen is officiating.
Visitation: one hour prior to the services.
Inurnment: Hewitt Cemetery in the family plot.
