A complete-game pitching performance by Clay Cottrell and timely hitting gave the Pirates a non-conference victory over the Raiders on Friday.

Cottrell fanned five in the game and struck out the side in the seventh frame.

"After not playing a game in 11 days it was nice to see the boys show up and make the plays behind Clay and get him the run support," Verndale skipper Matt Parker said.

The Pirates turned two double plays behind Cottrell.

Cottrell, Mike Hejhal, Isaac Schmidt and Dustin Motschenbacher all came up with one hit. Hejhal, Schmidt, Motschenbacher and Cody Yungbauer drove in runs.

Chad Dehler was hung with the loss despite giving up only five hits. The Raiders were guilty of four errors.
