The Mass of Christian Burial for Emarita Maxfield, of Willmar and formerly of Verndale, will be celebrated at 11:00a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2014, at the St. Fredericks Catholic Church in Verndale with Father Arlie Sowada as celebrant. Friends may call at the Verndale Chapel on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with Prayers at 5:00 and Christian Mothers Rosary at 6:00 p.m.. Visitation will resume at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Emarita passed away peacefully at the age of 93, on Monday, December 30, 2013, at Bethesda Pleasant View Nursing Home in Willmar, MN.

Emarita "Emma" Marie Schluttner was born on August 14, 1920, to John and Rosina (Ertl) Schluttner in Aldrich Township, Wadena County, MN. She graduated from Verndale High School with the class of 1939. Emarita was united in marriage with Edward Maxfield on November 30, 1940, at St. Fredericks Catholic Church in Verndale. She and Ed farmed east of Verndale until 1957 when they sold the farm and moved into town.

As a homemaker, Emaritas hours were filled with cooking and raising her family. Baking birthday cakes for family and friends, knitting, crocheting, and tending her garden were just some of her favorite pastimes. She found time to sing in the church choir for many years. Emarita especially loved being with her family, and they will fondly remember that everyone was welcomed into her home, where the door was always open.

Emarita was preceded in death by her parents John and Rosina; husband Edward on September 11, 1987; son Roger; brothers Frank and Thomas Schluttner; and sister Alice Yates.

She is survived by her children Betty (Carl) Butler of Grey Eagle, Steve of Verndale, Rich (Janice) of Willmar, and Phillip (Thess) of Rapid City, SD; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great-grandchild; along with sisters Anne Moench of Janesville, WI, Loretta Steffes of St. Cloud and Rosmarie Brejcha of Verndale.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jarvis Butler, Christy Bersheit, Aaron Butler, Kevin Maxfield, Kelsey Maxfield and Vincent Maxfield.

Burial will be in the St. Fredericks Catholic Cemetery in Verndale.

Arrangements are with the Schuller Family Funeral Homes of Verndale.
