Elsworth Vertice Jasmer, 85, who resided at Lakewood Pines in Staples, passed away at his home Aug. 21, 2009.
He was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Bartlett Township, rural Aldrich, to Adolph and Emma (Ellis) Jasmer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Verndale. His faith had a very strong influence on his life. Later he served as an elder at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hewitt. He attended schools in Bartlett Township and the Staples Area Vocational Technical Institute. He married Bernita Snakenberg on June 2, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hewitt. They were blessed with five children. He worked in the taconite mines near Hibbing and spent a few years with the Railroad Roundhouse in Staples. He was also a life-long farmer in Bartlett Township.
He enjoyed horses. He adopted many mustangs and raised mules. He strived hard to make people laugh and brighten their days. He enjoyed playing cards, riding around Staples on his scooter and attending garage sales.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertha on Aug. 26. Burial will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery rural Hewitt. Arrangements were with Domian-Anderson Funeral Home in Bertha (www.domian-anderson.com).
Survivors include his children, Gloria (Bill) Nokes of Bertha, Phil (Deb) Jasmer of Aldrich, Mary Beth (Bill) Schmidt of Monticello, Gail Workman of Monticello (fiancé Gordon Allex), and Judy Jasmer of White Bear Lake; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sisters, Eleanor (Everett) Ostlund of Carbonado, Wash., Bernetta (Richard) Swift of Glencoe, Minn., and brother Delbert (Irene) Jasmer of New Prague, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Bernita; his parents; his parents in-law; one great-granddaughter; sister, Ruth Holmquist; brother, Alfred; two brothers in infancy; brothers-in-law, Eskil Holmquist, Hank Muckula, Milo Haugrud and Ken Greenwaldt.
