Egg hunt coming April 7

In Wadena's annual Easter Egg hunt, eggs scramble you.

More specifically, when the egg hunt starts exactly at 1 p.m. on Saturday April 7 at the softball complex on the south side of Wadena, it takes just a few minutes of frenzy from hundreds of kids age 1 to 10 for nearly 14,000 eggs to disappear.

For the uninitiated, Wadena Chamber of Commerce executive director Shirley Uselman had this advice: they expect about 600 kids to show up, so get there early for any kind of decent parking spot in order to be ready for the start time.

After the whistle blows, weeks of planning and filling eggs are all over in about six minutes.

"Don't be late," she said. "Like we said, it only takes a very few minutes, and the eggs are gone."

The same rules apply as in previous years. Kids are divided into three age groups. Ages one to three will go to the horseshoe pits, ages 4 to 6 will go to the softball field and ages 7 to 10 will hunt in the trees.

"A lot of the kids stand there for - some of them - as much as an hour before it starts," Uselman said. "Anticipation keeps building and building and building ... You blow the whistle and you move out of the way."

There are solid-colored eggs, shiny eggs and eggs with designs like Spiderman, flower print, football and camo.

Nearly all of those have candy or trinkets inside, but a couple of them have prizes: one for Minnesota Twins tickets donated by KWAD and another for a bicycle donated by Casey's.

Participants may recycle the eggs after the candy is eaten and the trinkets are taken out. There will be boxes for dropping off the eggs on the spot, or if the eggs are taken home first, they can be later dropped off at the Chamber office.

The eggs will then be cleaned so they can be used again.
